We all are raised being told of the importance of keeping ourselves and our surroundings clean, but at the same time our society looks down on tasks which require us to get our hands dirty. We expect others to clean up our messes. These ‘others’, therefore, play a big role in keeping us healthy and facilitating us in achieving success in our professional and personal lives. In India, these ‘others’ overwhelmingly belong to the Dalit community. They are subjected to a lifetime of harassment, objectification and misery and denied their fundamental rights. Clearly, in our society, human values and morality are limited to the convenience of the elites.
In today’s session we will try to dissolve the wall of our privileged perception and understand the social, political and health abuse people performing the work of manual scavenging face on daily basis.
