Socialist Party (India) supports the ongoing campaign led by the ascetics of Matri Sadan, an ashram in Haridwar, to save the Ganga river from indiscriminate and unsustainable development activity. We oppose the construction of big dams, sand mining, industrial waste disposal and the unregulated construction of roads and buildings which encroach upon the banks of rivers, disrupt their natural flow, pollute their waters and damage their biodiversity. So far, four sages from Maitri Sadan have died for this cause, three of whom passed away in the course of their fasts against the destruction of the Ganga and one who was murdered by the mining mafia.
