Our present economy and growth model are exploitative in nature. They rely on consumer consumption and promulgate the fallacy of deriving comfort, pleasure and status from superfluous purchases. No wonder we are witnessing grim ramifications due to this model, namely climate change, pollution, oppression of indigenous communities/tribal people, cancer and other diseases, and if you observe carefully many of the prevailing societal and political issues can be attributed to the present consumerist model.
If we wish to limit rising temperature to 1.5C by 2050, we immediately need an economic model that promotes the principles of conservation instead of exploitation. If we wish our future generation to relish the fruits of life on the “blue dot” like we all did, we should not only cut back on consumption (minimalism) but also conserve what resources we have. Keeping all this in mind, we are organizing today’s dialogue.
