Dear Friends,

Many have uncritically considered GDP growth as a measure of progress. Under the neo-liberal regime, governments have single-mindedly pursued GDP growth, paying scarce attention to inequity. Profit maximisation by the rich has been used as the driving force for growth in GDP. This has accelerated the transfer of the workforce from agriculture to other sectors of the economy. It has led to extreme economic inequality and extensive damage to the environment. Many symptoms of unsustainability being clearly visible, a wise policy is to prioritise eco-restoration. This requires a radical change in the way we do agriculture and a shift of workforce to agriculture. We cannot afford to continue marginalisation of agriculture and facilitate corporate takeover of agriculture as the new farm laws are designed to do.

हममें से कुछ ने जीडीपी वृद्धि को अनैतिक रूप से प्रगति का एक उपाय माना है। नव-उदारवादी शासन के तहत, सरकारों ने जीडीपी विकास का आँख बंद करके अनुसरण किया है, जो असमानता पर सीमित ध्यान देता है। इसने कृषि से अर्थव्यवस्था के अन्य क्षेत्रों में कार्यबल के हस्तांतरण को गति दी है। इसने अत्यधिक आर्थिक असमानता और पर्यावरण को व्यापक नुकसान पहुंचाया है। अस्थिरता के कई लक्षण स्पष्ट रूप से दिखाई दे रहे हैं, एक बुद्धिमान नीति पर्यावरण-बहाली को प्राथमिकता देना है। इसके लिए हमारे कृषि करने के तरीके में व्यापक बदलाव और कृषि के लिए कार्यबल की एक बदलाव की आवश्यकता है।
