NGT SAYS HUSSAIN SAGAR CASE IN NGT SINCE 2015 AND NO IMPROVEMENT IN POLLUTED HUSSAIN SAGAR SINCE 6 YEARS

NGT SAID HUSSAIN SAGAR CASE MUCH OLDER AS IT WAS ALSO HANDLED BY SUPREME COURT BEFORE 2015 YET NO SOLUTION TO POLLUTED HUSSAIN SAGAR.

Today National Green Tribunal heard the 2015 case of Hussain Sagar when petitioner approached NGT in April 2015 to stop dewatering of Hussain sagar and for stopping of pollutants into Hussain Sagar and for clean Hussain Sagar.  Below is brief on hearings of 28 January 2021:

Joint Committee has reported the distressing situation of GHMC sewage flows highlighting the commissions and omissions of authorities. Few observations below:

a) 30-40% untreated sewage and industrial pollution in Hussain Sagar

b) STP Balkapur not functional, so all untreated to Golnaka without treatment into Moosi Nadi

c) Picket Nala STP 30 MLD where treated and untreated waters getting mixed.

d) HMDA had earlier assured repairs of sluices to be completed , but not done so.

e) State did not comply with earlier report recommendation of installing  quantum measuring devices to mesure pollutant waters at nallas and weirs.

f) Due to I&D and combined sewer/storm system, no fresh water entering lakes/river.

g) I&Ds in GHMC area increasing pollution loads of Moosi Nadi. Apart from 339 MLD of Amberpet remaining untreated pollutant waters entering in Moosi Nadi.

HEARING:

Judge also expressed that contamination of water bodies is punishable under Indian Penal Code.  Lake protection committee must take action against pollutants.  As Joint Committee report dated 22 January 2021 an earlier report of 17 August 2020 both state that more than 40% of polluted water enters Hussain Sagar without any treatment and this leads to pollution of Moosi Nadi.

NGT also asked about the Action Plan and about the 17 STPs that were reported by state government.

NGT questioned why the government of Telangana did not submit any update on its works regarding stopping pollution.

Petitioner told NGT that both the inspections of 2020 March and 2020 December by Joint Committee were not informed to petitioner whereas all respondents were present. She also appealed that STP is not sustainable solution.  She please be included in committee and be included in site visit so that she can submit her objections/suggestions/alternatives. NGT agreed to her request.

We shall update you on the matter and share the NGT order soon.

Best,

Dr Lubna Sarwath
