Letter to Minister of Enviroment, Forests, Science and Technolgy, Telangana: Stop Use of Plastic Strings for Packaging of Leafy Vegetables and Other Groceries

To

The Minister of Enviroment, Forests, Science and Technology

Government of Telangana

Hyderabad

Dear Minister,

Subject:  Stop use of plastic strings for leafy vegetables, groceries etc.

Ref:  One time use of plastic – clogging drains and water bodies.

We urge you to ban all plastic strings, that are tied for leafy vegetables and in other groceries. etc. at various bazaars/ shops/ stalls, pushcarts in the state of Telangana.

Please see picture below for your prompt understanding.

Chukka koora/chukkay ki bhaaji with plastic strings

These plastic strings come under one-time-use plastic that is banned (at least on paper).  It is a non-biodegradable waste.

When we track the route of this plastic string, it ends up as waste in dustbins once it is opened by the public.

Imagine crores of such strings each day ending up as non-biodegradable waste as a burden on the environment.

These strings also end up flowing through sewage drains and clogging up the drains. As most of storm water drains are connected with sewage/other wastes, these end up in all our water bodies, lakes and rivers.

Hence, we suggest that jute strings or banana fibre strings or any other natural material be used for tying up leafy vegetables, groceries, etc.

This would curb the dirty mess and once implemented in Telangana we can extend this to our entire country.

We once again urge you to immediately ban the plastic strings that are now being used for leafy vegetables, groceries, etc. and replace them with jute, banana fibre, or any natural/biodegradable material. We assure you of our coordination in the public interest. We shall approach any judicial platform for redressal if we do not have your prompt action within a week from the day of this email.

Best,

Dr Lubna Sarwath

Telangana State General Secretary, Socialist Party (India)
