Socialist Party’s Tribute to comrade P. Chidambaram
Well known trade union leader and one of the founder members of the Socialist Party (India) comrade P. Chidambaram passed away on 28 August 2017 at the age of 73 in Ahmedabad. He was suffering from cancer for a long time.
Comrade P. chidambaram had been a staunch follower of Dr. Rammanohar Lohia. He joined the socialist movement at an early age and worked with socialist stalwarts like Madhu Limaye, George Fernandez and Mrinal Gore in Mumbai. Later he shifted his activities to Ahmedabad and initiated a fight for victimized and oppressed classes under the auspices of Gujarat Majdoor Panchayat. He had been imprisoned for 11 months during the Emergency and also under National Security Act in 1982.
He fought a case in the Supreme Court for contract workers of Ukai Thermal Power Station in 1982. They were made permanent through a landmark judgment of the Supreme Court. He raised civil resistance, namely “Kargil Bhagao Desh Bachao” against the multinational company Kargil in 1993. He played an important role in re-formation of the Socialist Party (India) in 2011.
The demise of comrade P. Chidambaram is a huge loss to the labour movement of India which is passing through tremendous pressures due to the un-constitutional shift of Indian polity towards privatisation of the public sector.
The Socialist Party pays tribute to the relentless fighter.
