Petition: Call for the Immediate Release of Vernon Gonsalves

Vernon Gonsalves was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act by Pune police on 28th August 2018. He has been charged with inciting the Bhima-Koregaon anti-Dalit violence that took place in January 2018. He has also been accused of being a member of the banned CPI(Maoist) party and participating in a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gonsalves is an academic, trade unionist and social activist. He has done extensive work among unorganised workers in the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra, facilitating the formation of workers’ unions and advocating for better pay and working conditions.

He is also a political writer who regularly writes on issues of social inequality and injustice in India. In an article written in March 2017, he strongly opposed the UAPA, stating that it “criminalises ideology and association” and describing how it is being used by the government to crush dissent.

Gonsalves was born in a lower middle class Catholic family in Byculla, Mumbai. He obtained an M Com degree from Mumbai University, and was a gold medallist in academics. He was an executive in the multinational technology company Siemens.

He quit the corporate world to join academics and he has taught business management and economics at renowned institutions such as Ruparel College, HR College of Commerce and Economics, and Akbar Peerbhoy College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.

In 1983, he started work as a trade union organiser in the mining district of Chandrapur in Maharashtra.

Due to the political nature of his work Gonsalves has been a target of the government for many years. He was first arrested in the year 2007 on charges of being a Naxalite and possessing explosives and was falsely implicated in multiple cases. He spent 6 years in jail as his trials dragged on. By May 2013 he was acquitted in all but one of these cases.

The charges in the Bhima-Koregaon case are based entirely on electronic communication allegedly obtained from the hard drives of some of those accused. The authenticity of this evidence has been called into question by cyber experts as the police failed to follow proper procedures in the process of its collection.

Further, none of the electronic documents and letters obtained are written by Gonsalves or addressed to him. In spite of the flimsy nature of this evidence he has been refused bail by the Pune sessions court, and later the Bombay High Court.

We demand the dropping of all charges against Vernon Gonsalves and his immediate release.
