Celebration of Savitribai Phule’s Birth Anniversary at Haider Canal, Lucknow

Socialist Party (India) is organising an event at Haider Canal, near Buddheshwar in Lucknow on the occasion of the birthday of Savitribai Phule, India’s first woman teacher, who along with her husband Mahatma Jotiba Phule started an education programme for girls in Pune in 1848.

The Phule couple also valiantly fought the caste-based discrimination in Indian society and set up a home for abandoned women. The struggle of Savitribai can be gauged from the fact that she had to carry an extra sari to school as people with patriarchal and casteist mindset would throw mud and cow-dung at her and the couple was asked to leave the household of Jotiba’s father because of community pressure.
